Prince John records
Roark`s last thought before entering the land of dreams was, “Huh, the Little One is falling too.”
Hanlon and Roark are down for the count.
Weary with toil, I haste me to my bed
The dear repose for limbs with travel tired;
But then begins a journey in my head
To work my mind, when body’s work’s expir’d:
For then my thoughts—from far where I abide—
Intend a zealous pilgrimage to thee,
And keep my drooping eyelids open wide,
Looking on darkness which the blind do see:
Save that my soul’s imaginary sight
Presents thy shadow to my sightless view,
Which, like a jewel hung in ghastly night,
Makes black night beauteous and her old face new.
Lo! thus, by day my limbs, by night my mind,
For thee, and for myself no quiet find.
The philosophers and wisemen, the wicked and the wild, often give thoughts to the land of sleep and darkness. But mankind makes the mistake that this fearsome realm is unique to their kind. They have little idea that the realm can hold all those that live and breath, be it those with scales or tails, wings or fins.
And so, Roark dreams.
Roark remembers times before his current pet wizardling. As a hatchling, being fed the finest choices of meat and cheese by a pleasant old man-mage. Journeys to the Spire, always hunting for new shinies and baubles. Then, finding a youngling with potential. That smell of wine never far from his breath. But Roark thought he had `potential`. The spark. The `special`. Even when the Wizarding was in a cage, Roark thought he had potential.
And the adventures they had. With the Gentle Lady, the Brothers (Shifty-stupid and Strong-stupid), and eventually joined by the Short One. Through out, instructing the pickled Wizardling, preparing him for the future. Although Roark was never sure which one to work towards.
Now, two robed figures bend over him, examining him intently.
The first says, “I say it’s Fair." The second says, “I say it’s Fowl.”
The First says, "So fair a fowl I have never seen!”
Roark wakes up to a gentle caress…………..
The party had entered a small chamber at the bottom of the stairs, with 2 guards behind two heavy ballista, bolted to the ground. Roark and Hanlon are down. But the two guards are down as well. The remaining upright party share the treasure from the fallen soldiers. Tiran manacles the two guards together, so they can’t easily stand when they awaken.
Roark is gently awakened by Tierra, while she slaps Hanlon back to the land of the awake.
Gamalion is looking at the exit behind the ballista, with a set of thick bars with a heavy wooden door behind.
Tierra loots the unconscious guards. Roark quickly perks up, and is ready for action. Tiran looks at the ballista with the eye of an engineer, and shows Hanlon where to strike some metal pins to allow the devices to spin towards the entrance.
The treasure discovered includes: 2 sets of masterwork breast plates, 2 sets of gold necklaces, a potion of bull strength, cure mod wound, enlarge; 124 gold; masterwork short swords (x2), and 2 daggers.
Gamalion attempts to map out the bars – ‘my stone sense tells me the bars are vertical. Garion wanders the room, touching things. The entire party then hears a thunk, and see the door at the entrance close, with a click and a clunk. The staircase turns into a ramp, and Garion pulls an Urkle.
2 5foot domes open in the far corner; the party prepares for the new unseen danger. Tiran appears to move his hands, as if to cast a spell. Tierra prays, as Garion summons inner strength. Gamalion appears to be in a defensive post, and Hanlon holds his breath.
Hanlon leaps into the corner, as Gamalion holsters his thieves tools and steps behind the ballista. Tierra air walks up the stairs, and Roark looks into the opening. The raven says, ``I hear a chittery sound``. Garion turns around, and holds his attack.
A number of large centipedes emerge through the two openings, and Tiran casts flaming hands, hitting two. Hanlon strikes an injured one, and Garion also strikes yet another centipede. A total of 5 enter the room. Roark, Tiran, Hanlon and Garion strike the creatures. The creatures strike Hanlon and Lightson, but fails to strike Roark. They seem to have a poisonous strike, but Hanlon and Tiran manage to resist the effect.
Hanlon then strikes the first creature dead. Gamalion locks and loads the ballista, as Tierra also strikes and kills another centipede. Tiran takes a 5 foot step, and uses color spray to a devastating effect on another many-legged attacker. Roark strikes another one as well.
The first creature strikes Hanlon, the 2nd strikes Roark, and he falls; the 4th is blinded by the devastating color spray.
At the point, 4 columns of sand appear, pouring from openings in the ceiling.
While dealing with poison, Hanlon attempts to attack, but fails and drops his spiked damdra. Despite the bad luck, he manages to strike and kill another centipede. Gamalion behind the ballista, calls out, ``There`s a trap door``. The sand starts to cover the prone bird, but Roark manages to get up. He is struck by a creature, and is resilient against the poison. Roark looks in very rough shape.
Tierra is at the entrance. Another creature is struck by the devastating colorspray, such that 2 monsters are blinded. Garion strikes one dead, while Gamalion attempts to open the trap door. He is successful in his manipulation of the mechanism. The door, set in the floor behind the ballistas, is about 8×4 feet.
There is now 6 inches of sand covering the ground in the chamber, making the terrain more difficult to negotiate. Tiran attempts to get to the trap door, and elegantly gets caught up on a ballista. Hanlon picks up his damdra, runs and jumps into the hole, feet first. Roark flies into the opening. Gamalion tries to engage the sand, making a bubble wall, so it slows down the flow.
The sand is now 9 inches deep. Tierra and Garion help the tangled wizard from the ballista, and drop him into the trap door.
The sand is now 1 foot deep, but the entire party has now left the chamber.
Hanlon pops out of the shallow trench into the next room. Tiran pops up his head, and fearing for an ambush, casts fireball, without actually knowing the lay of the land. Fortunately, a wall a short distance away partially absorbs the blast, while the wizard tests the amount of energy he can safely absorb. Hanlon is still standing, despite the fire storm. Tiran then channels, and Roark looks quite a bit healthier. Gamalion now looks around.
Hanlon returns to the trench. Gamalion explores the trap door, and then the party sees a fireball strike the area. Tiran returns the favor, and casts fireball yet again (if at first you don’t succeed, cast, cast again).
Garion leaps up, gets the lay of the land, and heads down the hallway. Tierra channels again, healing those close by. She gets settled, but continues to float on air. Roark and Tiran benefit from the cleric`s abilities.
The next round, Tiran concentrates on the Pasha`s unique bow tie, and detects the item about 10m down the hallway. Tierra begins to fly (float really) down the hallway, swinging her chain and hammer. Roark continues to sit tight with Tiran.
A wooden bat springs from the wall, and hits Garion in the chest, but sweeps under the feet of the floating Tierra (she is very light on her feet). Hanlon follows in, bounding along the hallway.
At the end of the hallway is a small barrier, with Pasha Roy standing just behind it. Hanlon attempts to strike the chief thief but fails. Pasha strikes twice with his swords, and injures the diminutive warrior.
Gamalion yells to Tiran to move out of the foxhole to close the trap door. Garion charges to and over the barrier and strikes Pasha. The thief takes a mighty hit, but continues to stand. The two guards, previously manacled, are now free. Hiding and kneeling behind the barrier, they now stand up.
Tiran casts fireball (third time is the charm), but Pasha takes no damage. The spell effect misses striking Hanlon and Garion. Garion strikes again, but Pasha tumbles through Garion and Hanlon, and returns damage to Garion. The first guard fails to strike and falls down. The second guard is blocked by Pasha, but strikes Hanlon. Hanlon, now bleeding, falls down.
Garion again strikes Pasha, but misses with the second strike. Gamalion now closes the trapdoor after leaving the fox hole. Tierra, with her psinning hammer, gets up to 10 feet, but misses twice (30 seconds of Divine Favor is Left).
A critical time. In this next turn, Garion will take bleed (7). What will the heroes do?
